Sarah Vanrenen and Laura Hanbury head up an intimate team of interior designers working on projects across the UK and beyond. Each project has a special persona that blends Sarah Vanrenen and the client's identities, concentrating their wishes into something forever personal. Their project scope is all encompassing, with the key mission of adding value as a practical home that works whatever time of life. Their work begins at the project's conception - from initial interior architectural layouts and spatial planning through to the last personal touches. They create beautiful, usable inhabited spaces; designed with intent. Their high rate of repeat clients is a true marker of these values.
Sarah and Laura have used their experience and design acumen to create a collection of fabrics, and some furniture, that fills gaps in the market and reflects their comfortable, easy, usable ethos. With small production and a focus on handmade, artisan quality all their pieces are made to order, meaning every single item is individual. Both Sarah and Laura feel strongly about the saturation and disposable overproduction in parts of the industry. All the product they make is intended to be considered with little to no wastage - small batches, made to last.
Profile
Immersed in the world of interiors from an early age, Sarah’s childhood memories are of days spent with her mother on project installations and scouring fabric and antiques shops in London.
Originally Sarah had ambitions to be a painter, and inspired by artists including Singer and Freud studied Fine Art in Florence. Five years at Christie’s Auctioneers in London followed, a time she describes as ‘like a wonderful, extended university degree, that fuelled my artistic mind’. Sarah left Christie’s to start her own interior design business and is now one of the UK’s leading interior designers.
Well known for her bold use of colour, Sarah’s "English Eclectic" meets "New York Apartment” look has a very approachable feel. Sarah attributes her unique interior design style to her experiences and surroundings growing up. Having been born in South Africa and brought up in England, going to stay in beautiful country houses all her life, she understands how to layer and put pattern together in a way that feels
completely natural and uncontrived.
Laura Hanbury
Laura trained at KLC School of Interior Design before beginning her career at Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi and then joining Sarah Vanrenen Ltd.
Having worked on a wide range of projects in both the UK and abroad, Laura’s approach is thoughtful and considered. She understands the importance of working in harmony with the architecture of the building to create interiors that are both beautiful and timeless as well as being spaces to be lived in and enjoyed.
Laura strongly believes that incorporating colour, pattern and layers of interest with antiques and artwork is the key to creating comfortable, atmospheric rooms that feel as if they have evolved naturally over time.
